چکیده

A large number of investigations of paleoclimate have noted the influence of a ∼ 200 year oscillation which has been related to the De Vries/Suess cycle of solar activity. As such studies were concerned mostly with local climate, we have used extensive northern hemispheric proxy data sets of Büntgen and of 5 Christiansen/Ljungqvist together with a southern hemispheric tree-ring set, all with 1 year time resolution, to analyze the climate influence of the solar cycle. As there is increasing interest in temperature rise rates, as opposed to present absolute temperatures, we have analyzed temperature differences over 100 years to shed light on climate dynamics of at least the last 2500 years. Fourier-and Wavelet transforms as 10 well as nonlinear optimization to sine functions show the dominance of the ∼ 200 year cycle. The sine wave character of the climate oscillations permits an approximate prediction of the near future climate.

Assessing the role of North Atlantic freshwater forcing in millennial scale climate variability: a tropical Atlantic perspective

This study analyzes a three-member ensemble of experiments, in which 0.1 Sv of freshwater was applied to the North Atlantic for 100 years in order to address the potential for large freshwater inputs in the North Atlantic to drive abrupt climate change. The model used is the GFDL R30 coupled ocean–atmosphere general circulation model. We focus in particular on the effects of this forcing on the...

The Importance of Atmospheric Dynamics in the Northern Hemisphere Wintertime Climate Response to Changes in the Earth’s Orbit

Milankovitch proposed that variations in the earth’s orbit cause climate variability through a local thermodynamic response to changes in insolation. This hypothesis is tested by examining variability in an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to an ocean mixed layer model subjected to the orbital forcing of the past 165 000 yr. During Northern Hemisphere summer, the model’s response c...

CLIMATE MODEL SENSITIVITY, PALEOCLlM.l~TE J~ND FUTURE CLIMATE CHANGE

Radiatively active trace gases such as CO2, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons warm the surface-troposphere system by iru~reasing the infrared opacity of the atmosphere. Climate models have been used to estiimate the warming associated with future increases in these gases. An important issue is the sensitivity, or the amount of climate response associated with a given amount of radi...

On the importance of paleoclimate modelling for improving predictions of future climate change

We use an ensemble of runs from the MIROC3.2 AGCM with slab-ocean to explore the extent to which midHolocene simulations are relevant to predictions of future climate change. The results are compared with similar analyses for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and pre-industrial control climate. We suggest that the paleoclimate epochs can provide some independent validation of the models that is al...

Paleoclimate Modeling, Pre-quaternary

Introduction Pre-Quaternary paleoclimate modeling is the science of simulating climate change over the earliest 99.9% of Earth’s history using numerical models of the climate system. The record of pre-Quaternary climate documents enormous climate swings with global ice-covered and ice-free end members. A number of climate factors shaped Quaternary and pre-Quaternary paleoclimate on timescales r...
